Lateral Loaded Pile Analysis, Testing and Design

Most of the Civil Engineers consider only gravity load to design pile foundation. Some civil engineers consider the increase or decrease of vertical load in pile due to lateral loads, like wind load and earthquake load. There is lateral load applied to pile foundation due to lateral load of superstructure. This is ignored frequently. Design of pile foundation may be governed by lateral load in case of high rise building, slender structures. Soft soil and liquefiable soil will make the pile foundation design challenging. Bridge abutment and pier are subjected to more lateral load than vertical load.
